Reed's Remember When ...

This Blog is dedicated to remembering things the way they used to be and tying them to today. Not everything in the 'good old days' were good, but a lot of things still have merit. For instance, 'Remember When a half-gallon of ice cream was actually 2 quarts vice 1.75 quarts today? What's up with that?'

Name: Reed
Location: Midwest, United States

Trying to make sense of 'today' and ensure my children grow up with the beliefs that were instilled in me. Give them the best start in life. Stress do the 'right thing, the first time, every time.'

Reed's Remember Riding Shotgun

Remember being the first to call 'Shotgun'? You're out with your buddies, all piling in the car and you want the coveted front passenger side seat. What do you do? Call SHOTGUN. This is more of a guy thing, but most of you know what this means.

It brings to mind being young, free and summer nights out cruising. Someone in the group has their license and everyone else is ready for a night out. Whether it is the Friday night football game, trip to the movies or the local Burger Hut it doesn't matter. You're with friends and ready to conquer the world. Having the car and someone to drive represents freedom and a passion to be on your own. I still remember many times being out with Scott and Troy and calling Shotgun, sometimes even before we were out of the house.

Riding Shotgun is cool. It means you're free to hang your head out the window, talk to pretty girls and look cool. The poor guys in the back are usually stuck three across and can only roll the windows down half way. Try cruising for girls and be in the back seat. Not cool.

Sometimes my job requires travel with a small group of men. Every time we pile into a car or mini-van I instinctively call Shotgun. It's still cool (cruising in a mini-van is not cool though) being in the front seat, but we're not looking for girls. Usually it is someplace to eat. Ah, times change.

Next time be the first to call Shotgun. So what if it's in the front seat of a Kia and your spouse is driving - you're up front where the windows roll all the way down!
